His family changed their name to Solti after a small town. This was a common practice in Hungary at that time. When he was 12, he heard a symphony by Beethoven. This performance gave him the dream to become a conductor. To pay for his music studies, he gave piano lessons starting at age 13.

Solti's life changed during the 1930s because of difficult politics.

Because he was Jewish, he had to leave Hungary in 1938. He lived in London and then in Switzerland for a while. In Switzerland, he worked as a piano teacher because he could not conduct yet. After the Second World War ended, his career began to grow very quickly. He became the musical director for the Bavarian State Opera in 1946.

Solti became one of the most successful recording artists in history. He made more than 250 recordings during his long career. One of his most famous works was a set of operas by Richard Wagner. This set was voted the greatest recording ever made in two different polls. He also won 31 Grammy Awards for his musical work.
