People always noticed his striking appearance on stage. They also recognized his very clear way of speaking. He was a master of opera, which is a type of musical drama. Hotter loved the art of singing and spent his life performing. He brought many characters to life through his music.

Singing in an opera can be a very hard job. Hotter had to learn many different roles and musical styles. He often sang the works of Richard Wagner. One of his most famous parts was Wotan in the Ring Cycle. He sang this role from his early 20s until the mid-1960s. Later in his life, he chose lower roles like Gurnemanz. He did this because the lower notes suited his voice better. He even sang roles in different languages like Italian and German.

Hotter was born in Offenbach am Main in 1909. He studied music with Matthäus Roemer in Munich. He worked as an organist before his big debut in 1930. During a difficult time in Germany, he stayed true to his beliefs. He did not join the Nazi Party. He even avoided the Bayreuth Festival because of its political ties. After the war, he became a star all over the world. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1950.

His career included many amazing facts and numbers. At the Metropolitan Opera, he performed 13 roles in just four seasons. He sang the title role in Der fliegende Holländer. Hotter also worked closely with the composer Richard Strauss. Strauss even dedicated a song called "Erschaffen und beleben" to him. In 1962, his daughter Gabriele married Strauss' grandson, Richard. Hotter continued to perform well into his eighties and even his nineties. He was a very busy and successful artist.

Sometimes, funny things happened during his big shows. Once in London, he fell off the stage while wearing heavy armor. He hit the ground with a loud crash. However, he gallantly climbed back up to finish the music. In another show, he accidentally walked on stage with a pink coat-hanger on his shoulder! He did not notice the fluffy hanger until the opera ended. These stories show his great skill and his wonderful spirit on stage.
