He was an operatic baritone, which is a type of male singing voice. Many people called him the "Voce del leone," or the "voice of the lion." His voice was so strong that other famous singers were amazed by it. One singer, Giuseppe De Luca, even called his voice a miracle. Even record producers called him a genius because of his talent.

Learning to sing was a big part of his life. Ruffo was born in Pisa to a father who worked at an ironworks. He studied singing and how to use his voice with many different teachers. He made his first big appearance in an opera in Rome in 1898. After a slow start, his career really took off in the early 1900s. He became famous all over the world because of his acting and his loud, passionate voice. He traveled to many places to perform for large crowds.

His career took him to many famous cities and countries.

He sang in Buenos Aires in 1902 and London in 1903. He also performed in Milan, Lisbon, and Paris. In 1912, he came to the United States to sing in Philadelphia. He later sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York starting in 1922. During World War I, he even served in the Italian army. He performed 46 times at the Met between 1922 and 1929.

Music history remembers Ruffo for his many different roles. He sang as Figaro in "The Barber of Seville" and as Rigoletto. He also sang parts in operas like "Hamlet" and "Don Giovanni." Ruffo was a very special kind of singer in his time. He used a lot of power and a rich, chesty tone. Some people thought this was different from the older, more graceful style of singing. However, modern critics say he still had great control and skill. He was a "freelancer," which meant he could choose which opera houses to work for.

We can still hear Ruffo today through his many old music records. He made more than 130 records on large discs. He worked with companies like Pathé Frères and the Victor Talking Machine Company. His voice was so rich that it sounded very good even on old, early recording machines. He even signed a huge movie contract for $350,000 in 1929. Ruffo died in Florence, Italy, in 1953 at the age of 76. His life was a grand journey through the world of music.
