His most famous work is an opera called Pagliacci. It first appeared in 1892 and remains very popular today. People still perform it all over the world. He also wrote the song "Mattinata," which became very well known. A great singer named Enrico Caruso helped make that song famous.

Leoncavallo lived a life filled with travel and new places. He was born in Naples, Italy, in 1857. Later, he moved to Egypt to work as a private musician. He lived there for three years until 1882. During a time of revolt, he had to leave Egypt quickly. He took a British ship called the Propitious to reach France. In Paris, he worked as a music teacher and an accompanist. It was there that he met Berthe Rambaud. They became partners in 1888 and married in Milan in 1895.

Creating an opera is a big and difficult job. Leoncavallo often wrote both the music and the libretti himself. He was inspired by many things, including French poetry. One of his early successes was a symphonic poem called La nuit de mai. He also wrote an opera called La bohème in 1897. However, another composer named Puccini wrote an opera with that same name. Puccini's version became much more famous than Leoncavallo's version. Leoncavallo continued to write many different works throughout his career. He even toured the United States in 1906 with musicians from La Scala.
