He was known as a heldentenor, which is a special kind of powerful tenor voice. This voice type is perfect for the big, heroic roles in operas written by Richard Wagner. People remember him as the best example of this type of singer. He spent many years performing on the greatest stages across the globe. His voice brought great joy to many people who loved music. He even appeared in movies and on television later in his life.

His journey to becoming a star was very interesting.

He started his career in Denmark singing low baritone notes. One night, he helped a singer who was feeling unwell during a performance. He sang a very high note that helped her finish the song. A singer heard him and realized he was actually a tenor. He spent two years studying with teachers like Vilhelm Herold to change his voice. This hard work turned his high baritone voice into a strong, low tenor voice.

Melchior's career grew very quickly after he changed how he sang. In 1924, he sang at the famous Bayreuth Festival in Germany. He performed roles like Siegmund and Parsifal for the first time there. This led to a huge success at the Royal Opera House in London. He also became a very important member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Between 1926 and 1950, he performed Wagnerian roles there 519 times. He sang with many famous singers and conductors during these years.

Melchior lived a very busy and active life.

When he lived in America, he put his handprints in cement at a famous theater in Hollywood. He was also a fan of the card game called bridge. He actually holds a world record for the lowest score in a bridge tournament. He even sang the national anthem at baseball games in Los Angeles.

Even after he stopped performing on stage, he helped other musicians.

He started a special fund at the Juilliard School to help train new heldentenors. This way, his love for music would continue through new singers. He passed away in 1973 in California, just before his 83rd birthday. He was laid to rest in his home country of Denmark. His life shows how much hard work and practice can change a person's path. His music lives on through many old recordings made for companies like Polydor and RCA Victor.
