She was a dramatic soprano, which is a type of singer with a powerful, deep voice. People loved her because her voice had a natural beauty that sounded like gold. She was famous for her ability to sing many different roles at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Even though she was a star, she often felt very nervous before performing. This nervousness stayed with her throughout her entire career on the big stage.

Her journey to fame began with singing simple songs and popular ballads.

Early on, she worked as an accompanist for silent movies. She would sing to the audience while the projectionist changed the film reels. Later, she performed in vaudeville with her older sister, Carmela. They were known as the Ponzillo Sisters or "Those Tailored Italian Girls." They sang traditional ballads, Italian songs, and operatic pieces in large theaters. This helped them earn a good living before Rosa moved to opera.

Rosa was born Rosa Ponzillo on January 22, 1897, in Meriden, Connecticut.

Her parents were immigrants from a place called Caiazzo, near Caserta, in Italy. She grew up in a neighborhood filled with other Italian immigrant families. As a young girl, she studied the piano with a local teacher named Anna Ryan. While she was a good piano student, her natural voice was her true gift. She did not have much formal vocal training when she first started singing.

Her big break happened because of a famous singer named Enrico Caruso.

Caruso heard her sing and was very impressed by her talent. He helped arrange an audition with the manager of the Metropolitan Opera. Rosa made her professional debut on November 15, 1918, as Leonora in the opera *La forza del destino*. She sang alongside Caruso and Giuseppe De Luca. In the following years, she performed famous roles like Norma and Aida. She even traveled to sing at the Royal Opera House in London.

After 21 years of performing, Rosa decided to stop singing on stage.

She moved to a beautiful home in Maryland called Villa Pace. Even though she was retired, she still helped many young singers. She became a mentor for the Baltimore Civic Opera Company. Many famous singers, like Plácido Domingo, learned from her coaching. Rosa lived at her villa until she died on May 25, 1981. She was 84 years old when she passed away from bone marrow cancer.
