Melba's journey to fame involved a lot of hard work and travel. She first studied music in Melbourne, Australia. She learned to play the piano and sang in public at age six. Later, she moved to Europe to find a bigger career. In 1886, she went to Paris, France, to study with Mathilde Marchesi. Marchesi saw her talent right away. The teacher even called her a star!

Her career grew quickly after her time in Paris. She made her opera debut in Brussels in 1887. She sang the role of Gilda in the opera Rigoletto. This performance was a huge success. Soon, she moved to London to sing at Covent Garden. In 1893, she traveled to New York City. She performed at the Metropolitan Opera there for the first time.

Melba performed many different roles in many different languages. She sang in French and Italian more than German. She played famous parts like Marguerite in the opera Faust.

She also sang as Violetta in La traviata. Even though she was a star, she sometimes sang smaller roles. She did this because she did not like the snobbery of only doing big parts. She sang about 25 different roles during her whole career.
