People admired him for his strong and steady rhythm. He also helped bring new and different music to the stage. He recorded operas by Alban Berg before they were very common. Some critics even called him one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century.

His musical career followed a very clear path through many cities. He first studied law and earned a doctorate in his home town of Graz. Later, he studied music at the Vienna Conservatory. He began as a rehearsal assistant in 1917. Soon, he was leading music in cities like Munich and Darmstadt. He worked at the Hamburg State Opera starting in 1931. These early steps helped him become a world-famous leader of music.

Böhm spent much of his life in major opera houses. He led the Semper Opera in Dresden from 1934 to 1942. During this time, he performed new works by Richard Strauss. He also became a regular guest at the Salzburg Festival in 1938. In 1943, he took a top job at the Vienna State Opera. Later, he moved to New York to work at the Metropolitan Opera. He performed there 262 times and led many famous shows.

He left a huge legacy through his many music recordings. He recorded all the Mozart symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic. He also recorded the complete Beethoven symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1971. Many of his recordings were made for the company Deutsche Grammophon. He worked with famous orchestras like the London Symphony Orchestra too. He even held the title of President for the London Symphony Orchestra. These records allow people today to hear his specific way of leading.

His life also included a very difficult and serious history. He lived during the time of the Nazi regime in Germany. While he never joined the Nazi Party, he expressed support for their leaders. Some historians believe he did this to help his own career. He took a job in Dresden after another director was removed. Today, the Salzburg Festival has a plaque about this history. It explains that he used the system of that time to advance.
