Strauss used many different ways to make music. He was famous for writing tone poems. A tone poem is a piece of music that tells a story. Some of his most famous tone poems are *Don Juan* and *Also sprach Zarathustra*. He also wrote many operas, which are plays where the characters sing. His opera *Salome* brought him international fame. He worked with writers called librettists to create these stories. He also wrote beautiful songs called lieder.

Because of his father, Richard had a lifelong love for the horn. He even wrote two famous pieces for that instrument. Strauss began his musical studies at the age of four. He studied the piano and music theory with many teachers. He also learned how to lead an orchestra by watching his mentor, Hans von Bülow. This training helped him become a great conductor.

Strauss held many important musical jobs in different cities. He worked in Munich at the Bavarian State Opera. He also served as a conductor in Berlin and Vienna. In 1920, he helped start the Salzburg Festival.

During a difficult time in German history, he held two major roles in 1933. He was the head of the Reichsmusikkammer and led the Bayreuth Festival. These jobs were controversial because of the Nazi Party. Strauss took these positions to protect his Jewish daughter-in-law and his grandchildren. He also tried to protect the rights of other composers.

Many people still listen to Strauss's music today. His works are considered standards for orchestras and opera houses around the world. You might hear his music in a concert hall or even a movie. He is remembered for his skill in making large groups of instruments sound wonderful together. Even though he faced hard times, he kept making music until he died in 1949. In 1948, a group of experts cleared him of any wrongdoing.
