Joining this group is hard. Musicians must first play in the Vienna State Opera. They must perform there for at least three years. After that, they can ask to join the Philharmonic. The group does not hire anyone over age 35.

This orchestra has a long history. It began in 1842. A group of people met at an inn to start it. They even had a leader named Otto Nicolai. Over the years, many great leaders helped them. These leaders are called conductors.

Famous conductors like Hans Richter and Gustav Mahler led the group. Richter helped them play new music by Johannes Brahms. Mahler led the group on a big trip to Paris. Later, Felix Weingartner led many concerts. He even took the group to South America. The musicians work hard to keep their high skill.
