During a raid, Crimean Tatars took her from her home. She was brought to Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire. She entered the imperial harem, which was a private part of the palace. There, she worked her way up through the ranks. Eventually, she became the favorite person of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

Suleiman did something that had never been done before. He broke long-standing Ottoman traditions for Hürrem. He freed her and made her his legal wife. Before this, sultans usually did not marry women from the harem. They often had many different partners at the same time. However, Suleiman became monogamous because of his love for her. He did not have children with any other women for the rest of his reign.
