The Auspicious Incident was a major change for the Ottoman Empire. It happened in the capital city of Constantinople on 15 June 1826. This event was the forced end of the Janissary Corps. The Janissaries were a famous group of soldiers who had served for centuries.

Sultan Mahmud II led this change. He wanted to make the empire stronger and more modern. This event is called "auspicious" because the Sultan saw it as a good start for his country.

The Janissaries began in the late 14th century as household troops. They were originally an elite group of soldiers. They were chosen through the devşirme system. This system took young Christian boys from places like the Balkans. These boys became Muslims and joined the Ottoman army.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, they were very effective. They were known for being disciplined and professional. They were paid regularly and always ready for battle.

Over time, the Janissaries changed. By the early 17th century, they were no longer an elite force. They became a privileged class that did not pay taxes. This made many people unhappy. The group grew from 20,000 men in 1575 to 135,000 men in 1826. Many of these people were not even real soldiers. They still collected pay from the empire. They even had the power to remove a Sultan from his throne.

Sultan Mahmud II decided to create a new army. He wanted it to be trained like modern European armies. He called this new group the Sekban-ı Cedit. The Janissaries did not want to lose their power. They revolted and marched toward the Topkapı Palace.

The Sultan responded by using artillery fire. The Janissary barracks were set on fire. This led to a heavy fight in the streets of Constantinople. Many Janissaries died in the conflict.

After the revolt, the Janissary Corps was gone. The Sultan replaced them with a new force. This new army was called the Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye. This name means "The Victorious Soldiers of Muhammad."

Some skilled Janissaries were allowed to join the new army as officers. Others were sent to prison or exiled. This change helped the Sultan try to restore the empire's power. It marked the end of one era and the start of a new military way.
