The Janissaries were a special group of elite soldiers. They served the Ottoman sultan, who was the leader of a large empire. These men were part of one of the first modern standing armies in history. They were also some of the first soldiers to use firearms as their main weapons.

This made them very strong and important in battle. They were much more organized than many other armies of that time.

To become a Janissary, boys were chosen through a system called the child levy. This system took Christian boys from places like the Balkans. These boys were taken to learn the Turkish language and the customs of the empire. They also converted to Islam.

After learning the culture, they went to a special school called the Enderun. At this school, they trained for different jobs. Some became archers, while others became engineers or riflemen.

Life for a Janissary was very different from a normal soldier. They lived together in barracks and were part of a close community. They were paid regular salaries and even received pensions when they retired.

They were famous for their strict discipline and order. Even the sultan would sometimes dress like them to visit their barracks. They also had special jobs during peacetime, like acting as firefighters or palace guards.

Over many years, the Janissaries began to change. In the 16th century, the rules became less strict. For the first time, children of Janissaries were allowed to join the group.

Later, civilians could even buy their way into the corps. Many soldiers started working in other trades and began to marry. This meant they were no longer as focused on military training. They became a powerful political group that often fought against new ideas.

Because they resisted change, the Ottoman military fell behind other countries. The Janissaries often rebelled when they felt their power was threatened. This continued until the year 1826. At that time, Sultan Mahmud II decided to end the group for good.
