Young Christian boys were taken from places like the Balkans. They were brought to the empire to learn the culture. They also learned Islam. These boys were trained to be skilled experts. Some became riflemen or engineers. They were paid regular salaries and lived in barracks. They were very disciplined and loyal to the sultan.

Over time, things began to change. The rules became less strict. People could buy their way into the group. Many Janissaries began to work in other trades. They also gained the right to marry. This made the group less focused on war. They often fought against new military changes. Finally, in 1826, the sultan ended the group. This event was called the Auspicious Incident.
