In the past, they were some of the best troops in Europe. They were very disciplined and ready to fight.

But things changed over many years. The group grew to 135,000 people. Many were not even real soldiers. They held much power over the state. They could even remove a leader if they did not like him. This caused problems for the empire.

Sultan Mahmud II wanted a modern army. He wanted troops trained in a new way. The Janissaries did not want this. They revolted and marched toward the palace.

This led to a violent fight in the capital city. The Sultan used cannons to fight back. Many Janissaries were killed or sent to prison. The group was finally ended in June 1826. This event is called the Auspicious Incident. The Sultan then made a new army to protect his land. Some Janissaries even joined this new force if they were skilled.
