Long ago, many Armenians lived in the Ottoman Empire.

They were a group with their own culture and religion. Most Armenians lived in a place called Anatolia.

By 1914, things were changing. The Ottoman Empire lost some of its land in wars. This made the leaders, called the CUP, feel very afraid. They feared Armenians might want to be free and independent.

In 1915, the leaders began a plan to destroy the Armenian people.

On April 24, they arrested many Armenian leaders. Then, they sent huge groups of people on long walks. These were called death marches. The people walked toward the Syrian desert. They were not given enough food or water.

Many Armenians died during these marches. Some were even forced to change their religion.
