Smyrna was a busy city by the sea.

Many different people lived there. Greeks, Turks, Armenians, and Jews all shared the city. It was a place where many cultures met.

In September 1922, the city changed forever. First, the Turkish military took control of the city. This ended the Greco-Turkish War. A few days later, a very large fire started.

The fire burned for many days. It destroyed the parts of the city where Greeks and Armenians lived.

Many people had to flee the flames. Up to 400,000 refugees crowded near the water.

They stayed in harsh conditions for nearly two weeks. Many people died during this time. Some died in the fire, while others died during the war.

People still argue about who started the fire. Most scholars say Turkish soldiers started it. Some others say the Greeks or Armenians started it. This event remains a sad memory for Greece and Turkey today.
