It was a place where many different cultures lived together. People from many backgrounds shared the streets and the markets. Before the war, the city was a center of many different groups. There were many Greeks, Turks, Armenians, and Jews living there. Some people even called it a cosmopolitan center because of this variety. It was a very important place in the Mediterranean region.

In September 1922, a series of hard events changed the city.

Between 80,000 and 400,000 Greek and Armenian refugees fled to the waterfront. They had to stay there in very harsh conditions for nearly two weeks. Many people lost their homes and their lives during this time. Estimates say between 10,000 and 125,000 Greeks and Armenians died from the fire. Many men were also sent away into the interior of Anatolia. Most of those men died in very difficult conditions.

There are many different stories about how the fire started.

Most modern scholars and many eyewitnesses say Turkish soldiers started the fire. They believe the goal was to remove the Christian presence from the area. However, some Turkish sources have different views on this. A few sources say that Greeks or Armenians started the fire. They suggested this was done to hurt the reputation of the Turks. People still debate these different accounts today.

This event is remembered as one of the most catastrophic urban fires.

It is often described by historians as a war crime or an act of genocide. Winston Churchill even called the event an "infernal orgy." The destruction of the city changed the way people lived in that region. Today, the memory of the fire is still a source of tension. It remains a very important part of the history between Greece and Turkey.
