This land covered much of what is now called Puntland. The people there were skilled at seafaring and trading with others. They had a strong system for running their own government. They even made official treaties with foreign nations. This kingdom was a very important part of the region's history.

Life in the sultanate involved a lot of movement and trade. Many people were semi-nomadic, meaning they moved from place to place. They used the sea to connect with the rest of the world. Traders moved goods like white salt and white gum. They also traded cloths, which were used like money. Some areas were very dry, but they still had valuable items. These goods were often sent far away to places like Portugal.

History tells us different stories about when the kingdom began. Some people believe it started as far back as 1420. Other traditions say it formed in the late 15th or early 16th century. A Portuguese explorer once wrote about a ruler in the Guardafui region. The kingdom reached a golden age under a leader named Boqor Osman Mohamoud.

He was known for being a very resourceful and smart king. His rule helped the sultanate become very prominent in the 1800s.

In the late 1800s, many things began to change for the kingdom. On April 7, 1889, the sultanate signed a treaty with Italy. This made the kingdom a protectorate of the Italian government. This meant Italy would provide help and arms to the sultan. In return, the sultan gave Italy some economic rights. The rulers hoped this would help them keep their independence. However, a rival named Yusuf Ali Kenadid later broke away to start the Hobyo Sultanate.

Conflict arrived when Italy decided to take direct control of the land. In 1925, the Italian government stopped following the old treaties. They wanted to rule the northern sultanates themselves. This led to a period of fighting known as the Campaign of the Sultanates. Italian ships even attacked towns like Baargaal.

One ship bombed the town for 22 hours. Eventually, the kingdom was integrated into Italian Somaliland. Today, much of this former territory is part of the Puntland state.
