The Ajuran were known as a "hydraulic empire." This means they were experts at using water. They built big dams and dykes on the Shebelle River. They also made large stone wells. These wells helped people and animals find water.

The empire was a great center for trade. Ships sailed to places like East Asia. The Ajuran may have been the first Africans to meet people from China. They even made their own coins for business.
