It even had a group of titled leaders.

In 1889, Yusuf Ali made a deal with Italy. This made Hobyo a protectorate. A protectorate is a land that has a treaty with another country. Italy gave the Sultan weapons and money. In return, Italy had some control over trade.

Later, things changed. Italy wanted to rule the land directly. This led to a big fight. A leader named Omar Samatar led a rebellion.

He fought to keep the land free from Italian rule. He captured towns like El Buur. The Italians eventually retook the area in 1925.

Even after the sultanate ended, its ideas lived on. People from Hobyo helped build Somali nationalism. They also helped create a new way to write the Somali language. Today, a school is named for Omar Samatar to honor his fight.
