Before this time, they lived in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya.

At first, the Oromo went on short trips. They would raid nearby areas to get cattle. After these trips, they quickly went back home. This happened because the nearby kingdoms were busy fighting each other.

By the 1530s, the Oromo had a new way to move. They used scouts to find land. They used surprise attacks at night. Then, they would settle in the new area.

Things changed a lot under a leader named Meslé. The Oromo began to stay in new places. They also started to ride horses. Riding horses made them much stronger in fights.

This movement reached many places. They moved into the Harar region. This caused many towns to build walls for safety. The Oromo also met many different groups of people. Over time, many people joined the Oromo way of life.
