This book is a national epic. It is written in a language called Ge'ez. The text is at least 700 years old. It tells stories about the roots of the Solomonic dynasty. This was a line of kings who ruled Ethiopia until 1974. For many, this book is a source of great pride. It holds many religious and national feelings for the people.

The book works like a long debate. It starts with 318 leaders from the Council of Nicaea. They ask a big question about the glory of kings. One leader named Gregory gives a speech. Then, an archbishop reads from a book found in a church. This part of the book is the most important. It tells the story of how the Ark of the Covenant came to Ethiopia. The Ark is a very holy object in the Bible. The book uses these stories to explain history.

One famous story is about Queen Makeda. Some people call her the Queen of Sheba. She heard about the wisdom of King Solomon in Jerusalem. Makeda traveled a long way to meet him. She was very impressed by his knowledge. The book says she decided to worship the God of Israel. Makeda and Solomon had a son named Menelik I. Menelik later went to visit his father in Jerusalem. He eventually returned to Ethiopia with the Ark of the Covenant.

History tells us different things about this book. Some scholars believe the stories were created in the 13th century. They think these tales helped a new dynasty take power. This group was called the Solomonic dynasty. They replaced the Zagwe Dynasty in Ethiopia. Many Ethiopian Christians still believe the book is true. Some say the book was originally written in Coptic. Others think it was translated from Arabic into Ge'ez. A team of clerics helped with this work.

This book connects many different ideas together. It uses parts of the Hebrew Bible to tell its tales. It also uses other ancient writings like the Book of Enoch. The stories link the history of Ethiopia to the history of Israel. It shows how the two lands are connected through faith. The book even talks about the power of Rome and Ethiopia. It is a mix of many legends and traditions. It remains a very important part of Ethiopian culture today.
