How this kingdom began is a mix of history and legend. Long ago, the Kingdom of Aksum changed to Christianity. This happened during the rule of a leader named Ezana. Some say two brothers named Frumentius and Aedesius helped this change. As Christianity grew, other groups kept their own Jewish ways. These groups mixed local faiths with new beliefs. This created a unique way of life in the mountains.

Stories from the past tell of many different leaders. One legend speaks of a Jewish Queen named Gudit. People say she ruled for forty years. Some stories say she defeated the empire and burned its churches. However, many modern experts do not think she was a real person. There are stone markers near Aksum called Judith's Field. People used to think these were her graves.

Many kings tried to control the Simien area over the years. Around the year 1329, a leader named Amda Seyon I led campaigns there. He fought in provinces like Simien, Wegera, Tselemt, and Tsegede. In these places, many people were following Judaism. Later, Emperor Yeshaq ruled from 1414 to 1429. He had allies among the Beta Israel. He even conquered the lands of Simien and Dembiya.

Rules about land changed how people lived in the kingdom. Emperor Yeshaq made a very important rule about property. He said people could keep their land if they became Christians. If they did not change, they could not inherit their father's land. This meant many people lost their homes. These people were called Falasha. This word means wanderers or landless people. This history explains why the name was used for a long time.
