She was the first woman to rule the Ethiopian Empire as an Empress. Her official title was "Queen of Kings," which was a special version of the traditional title for rulers. Zewditu was born in 1876 and was the daughter of Emperor Menelik II. She was a very religious person who cared deeply about her faith. Her life was filled with many big changes for her country and her family. She is remembered as a leader who tried to keep her nation's traditions alive.

Zewditu's path to the throne began with many difficult steps. After her father died in 1913, a man named Lij Iyasu took power. However, Iyasu was not well liked by the leaders or the church. In 1916, the Council of State and the church removed Iyasu from power. They chose Zewditu to be the new Empress instead. She was crowned on February 11, 1917, at the Cathedral of St. George in Addis Ababa. This city was the capital that her father had founded many years before.

Ruling a country was a very hard job for Zewditu. She did not rule all by herself during her time on the throne. Her cousin, Ras Tafari Makonnen, was appointed as her Regent. A Regent is someone who helps a ruler manage the country. While Zewditu was the Empress, Tafari held a lot of the power. They often had very different ideas about how to lead Ethiopia. This created a split between two groups of people in the government.

One group wanted to keep things the way they had always been. Zewditu led this group and focused on traditional values and the church.

The other group wanted to make Ethiopia more modern. Ras Tafari Makonnen led these people and wanted to work with other nations. He helped Ethiopia join the League of Nations and helped end slavery. Zewditu often disagreed with these new changes. She spent much of her time on prayer and building new churches.

Zewditu's reign was a bridge between the old ways and the new world. She worked to protect the independence and culture of Ethiopia. Even when things were difficult, she stayed dedicated to her role. She died in 1930, which marked the end of her era. After she passed away, Ras Tafari became the next Emperor, known as Haile Selassie I. Today, people study her life to understand how leaders handle great change. Her story shows the struggle to balance tradition with a changing world.
