It was a paramilitary organization that worked for Adolf Hitler. This group grew to be very powerful during World War II. They operated in Germany and many lands held by Germany. The SS was used for security and spying on people. It also used terror to control the public. This group became a central part of the Nazi regime.

The SS was made of several different parts. One part was the Allgemeine SS, or General SS. They handled policing and enforced Nazi racial rules. Another part was the Waffen-SS, which were combat units. These soldiers fought in battles and swore loyalty to Hitler. A third group was called the SS-Totenkopfverbände.

This group ran the concentration camps and extermination camps. Other small groups like the Gestapo also worked within the SS. They looked for enemies and gathered intelligence.

The group started out very small in Munich. In 1923, it was a tiny guard called the Saal-Schutz. This unit only provided security for party meetings. Hitler also formed a small personal bodyguard called the Stabswache. This unit began with only eight men.

After a failed attempt to take power, the group changed names. In 1925, it became the Schutzstaffel. Leaders like Julius Schreck and Joseph Berchtold ran it early on. Erhard Heiden also led the group for a short time.

Heinrich Himmler took control of the SS in 1929.

Under his leadership, the SS grew very fast. He wanted it to be an elite group of soldiers. Membership reached 209,000 people by the end of 1933. Himmler even built special schools for training officers. These schools were in places like Bad Tölz and Braunschweig. He used strict rules to make the men very tough. Members had to show they had the right family history. They also had to show total loyalty to Hitler.

The SS was responsible for many terrible crimes. They were the main group during the Holocaust.

They were involved in the murder of about 6 million Jews. They also killed millions of other people, including 10.5 million Slavs. The SS used people as slave labor in camps. After the war, a court in Nuremberg judged the SS. The court called the SS a criminal organization. One high-ranking leader, Ernst Kaltenbrunner, was executed in 1946.
