In this crime, one person pays another to kill someone. This is done through an illegal agreement. The person who does the killing is often called a hitman. Some people also call them a sicario.

These crimes are not very common. They make up a small part of all murders. For example, they were about 6% of murders in Scotland from 1993 to 2002. In Australia, they were only 2% of murders during that same time.

A study in Australia looked at many such crimes. It found that most people did this to get insurance money. The payments were often between $5,000 and $30,000. The average payment was $15,000. Most people used guns for these crimes.

Some people think hitmen are like serial killers. They both do bad things for money or other reasons. But they are not the same. They have different goals for their crimes.
