A subculture is a special group of people within a larger society.

These groups have their own unique values and ways of living. They often differ from the main culture, which is sometimes called the superculture. Subcultures can form around shared interests, beliefs, or even political ideas. Members might use specific styles to show who they are. This can include things like tattoos, piercings, or certain types of plastic surgery. By following these unique rules, people find a sense of belonging.

Subcultures work by creating their own sets of norms. Norms are the unwritten rules that guide how people act. Members often use style to communicate their identity to others. This includes using specific clothing, music, or even a special way of speaking. Some researchers call this "subcultural capital." This means that knowing the right things helps a person gain status within the group.

It is a way for members to stand out from the rest of the world. They use these shared symbols to build a strong community.

People began studying these groups more closely in the 1940s and 1950s. This study mostly happened in North America and the United Kingdom. Early researchers from the Chicago School saw subcultures as a form of deviance. They thought these groups were breaking social rules or acting like outsiders. Later, thinkers like Dick Hebdige looked at them in a new way. In 1979, he wrote about how subcultures use style to express themselves. He argued that these groups help people who feel neglected by society.

There are many different types of subcultures in our world. You might recognize names like punks, skinheads, or rockers. Other groups include mods, bikers, and hip-hoppers. Even fans of shows, like Trekkies, can be seen as a subculture.

Some groups are even defined by their music, like goth or rave cultures. In 1995, Sarah Thornton described how these groups are like "taste cultures." They are not always separate from the main world. Instead, they often mingle with the larger society in many ways.

Sometimes, the main culture tries to use subcultures to sell things.

Big companies might copy a subculture's style to make products look "cool." This is called cultural appropriation. When this happens, a subculture might change its look to stay unique. This can cause the group to evolve into something new. Music-based groups are often the first to see this happen. A style that was once very different can quickly become mainstream. This constant change keeps the world of culture moving forward.
