This subculture draws inspiration from Victorian clothing and the fancy Rococo period. People often wear these clothes to express an alternative identity or to feel more confident. For some, it is a way to escape the pressures of adult life. They use fashion to enter a fantasy world of eternal innocence. It is a way to show a side of themselves that might not fit into daily life. Some people simply wear it because they find it fun.

To get the right look, the clothes use many layers.

The most important part is the volume of the skirt. This is made by wearing a petticoat or a crinoline underneath. These underskirts can make a skirt look bell-shaped or like an A-line. A typical outfit includes a blouse with long or short sleeves. This is worn with a skirt or a dress called a jumperskirt (JSK) or a one-piece (OP). These dresses usually reach down to the knees. People might also wear wigs, hair bows, or bonnets on their heads.

The history of this style is linked to many different movements. In the 1970s, a movement called Otome emerged, which means "maiden." This style was a bit simpler than Lolita fashion. During the 1980s, the "kawaii" or cute style became very popular in Japan. Before Lolita was a known name, a style called "dolly-kei" existed. Brands like Milk and Angelic Pretty helped create the look. The term "Lolita" first appeared in the magazine Ryukou Tsushin in September 1987. Later, more brands like Baby, The Stars Shine Bright arrived.

Many famous people and places helped the fashion grow. In the 1990s, visual kei bands like Malice Mizer became popular. Their members wore elaborate clothes that fans loved to copy. A musician named Mana helped popularize the Gothic Lolita style. He even started his own label called Moi-même-Moitié in 1999. In Japan, the Harajuku Bridge became a famous meeting place for these fans. Magazines like the Gothic & Lolita Bible helped the style spread to other countries. Now, people can even buy these clothes in cities like Paris and New York.

Lolita fashion connects to many things you might already know. Many outfits are inspired by the book Alice in Wonderland. The character Alice is seen as a symbol of beauty and innocence. Some styles also look back to Marie Antoinette and the Rococo era. Even the Japanese government has helped by naming "ambassadors of cuteness." These models help show different styles like frills-and-lace or school uniforms. Today, the internet helps people all over the world share and buy these special clothes. It is a way for people to find a community through what they wear.
