This style often uses soft colors like pink, blue, and white. It uses rounded shapes to make things look sweet. Many characters have big eyes and small mouths. These features make them look innocent and vulnerable. People love kawaii because it brings a sense of joy and lightheartedness to life.

There are many ways to show the kawaii style. Some people use it in the way they dress. For example, Lolita fashion uses lace, bows, and ribbons.

Kawaii has a very long history in Japan. A writer named Sei Shōnagon wrote about cute things in her book, The Pillow Book, between the years 900 and 1000. She even mentioned a child's face drawn on a melon!

Later, in the 1970s, kawaii culture began to grow very fast. This was driven by cute characters in manga, which are comics, and anime, which is animation. A famous character named Hello Kitty was created by Sanrio in 1974.

In the 1980s, a new way of writing became popular. Teenage girls created a style called "round writing," or marui ji.

They used mechanical pencils to make very fine lines. They wrote in big, round characters and added small pictures. They drew hearts, stars, and even little faces. This writing was so different that some schools actually banned it! By the 1980s, magazines and toy companies began using this cute writing for advertising.

Today, kawaii is a huge part of many things. It is seen in toys, fashion, and even how people act. Some famous pop stars, called idols, use cute styles to connect with fans.
