Early groups like the Jomon people lived on the islands first. Later, the Yayoi people arrived from the East Eurasian continent. They brought rice cultivation to the land. Then, the Kofun people arrived from China. They helped start a centralized way to lead the country. Today, Japan is very famous all over the world. In 2023, U.S. News & World Report ranked its cultural influence as the highest in Asia.

Writing in Japan is a very interesting way to share ideas. People use three different scripts to write their words. They use kanji, which are characters that come from China. These are used as logograms, which means they represent words.

They also use two sound-based scripts called hiragana and katakana. Hiragana was often used by women for informal writing in the 9th century. Katakana was used by men for formal writing. By the 10th century, everyone used both systems. Many English words like origami and karaoke now come from Japan.

Art is another huge part of Japanese life. One special art is calligraphy, or "the way of writing."

Artists use a brush and ink to make beautiful characters. Sometimes, an artist must try one hundred times to get one character right. There is also suibokuga, which is ink painting. This is the art of painting scenes with diluted black ink. Painters often focus on animals, landscapes, or people. The Kano school of the 16th century was famous for bold brush strokes.

Religion plays a very important role for many people. Shinto is an old religion that started before the 6th century. It focuses on rituals and ceremonies. Shinto followers believe spirits live in nature, like in trees or rocks.

Buddhism arrived from India during the 6th century. At first, it was not very popular. However, people grew to love its beautiful art by the 8th century. In 2018, research showed that about 66.7 percent of people practiced Buddhism. About 25.6 percent practiced Shintoism.

Japan has also learned from many other places. For a long time, Japan was isolated from the rest of the world. This lasted for over 220 years during the Tokugawa shogunate. This changed when the "Black Ships" arrived and started the Meiji era. This era opened Japan to Western influences. Now, Japanese culture is a blend of old traditions and new ideas. You can see this in how they use the Latin alphabet for logos. You can also see it in how they use Western-style chapels for weddings.
