Kanji are special characters used in the Japanese writing system.

These characters are logographs, which means each sign represents a word or an idea. They are a vital part of how people in Japan communicate every day. Most kanji have two different ways to be pronounced. The first way is called kun'yomi, which uses native Japanese sounds. The second way is called on'yomi, which imitates the original Chinese sounds.

Using both types of reading helps make the language work.

Learning to use kanji involves understanding how they look and sound. People often use small symbols called furigana to show the phonetic sounds of a character. Some characters were even made in Japan by combining parts of other Chinese signs. In the past, writing was a very different task. Because paper was rare, people wrote on thin wooden strips called mokkan.

These strips were used for government messages and even for trading salt and cloth. Today, kanji are used alongside other scripts like hiragana and katakana.

History shows that kanji arrived in Japan from China a long time ago. They first appeared on items like coins, swords, and mirrors. One early example is a gold seal from 57 CE.

Writing became more common around the fifth century CE. A scholar named Wani may have brought knowledge of these characters to Japan. During the Heian period, women even developed their own way of writing. They used a style called onnade, or "ladies' hand," to write literature.

There are many specific numbers to know about these characters. Nearly 3,000 kanji are used for common communication and names. Japanese children learn 1,026 characters in elementary school. This specific list is called the kyōiku kanji. After that, students learn more characters in junior high and high school. The full list for students, called the jōyō kanji, has 2,136 characters. The government has released different lists since the 1920s to help with education.

Kanji connects Japan to many other parts of Asia. Some Japanese-made words, called wasei-kango, have even been borrowed by other languages. For example, the Japanese word for telephone was used in Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese. While some characters mean the same thing in China and Japan, others are unique. The character for "honest" is written the same way, but the sounds are different. This shows how one set of symbols can link many different cultures together.
