Designers can create outfits from scratch or mix existing clothes together. These clothes help build the visual world of a play or a movie. They can show a character's age, their personality, or how much money they have. Costumes are used for many things like theater, cinema, or even musical performances. They also appear in cosplay and at parties.

Designing a costume follows a careful set of steps. First, the designer must analyze the script and the music. They create a costume plot to track which character wears what in every scene. Next, the designer meets with the director to agree on a shared vision. After that, the designer does deep research to understand the setting and the people. They start with quick, rough sketches to test their ideas. Finally, they make detailed paintings called renderings using watercolors or acrylic paints.

Actors used simple but symbolic clothes and ritualized masks. These masks helped show emotions without the actor needing to change them. In the 16th and 17th centuries in England, costumes became very important. During the Elizabethan era, garments were made from very expensive, fine fabrics. Later, in the 19th century, people wanted more historical accuracy. Georg II, the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, insisted on using real armor and chain mail.

Many famous people helped change how we see costumes. In 1823, James Planché helped start a revolution in British theater. He worked with Charles Kemble at Covent Garden to design accurate clothes for the play King John. This success led to many other Shakespeare plays having better costumes. In Beijing Opera, costumes are very colorful and patterned. They use at least 300 pieces to show a character's status. Red means loyalty, while yellow is used for royalty.

Different cultures use costumes in unique ways. In Japanese Noh drama, actors wear wooden masks that can last for generations. In Kabuki theater, actors use heavy makeup instead of masks. Some Kabuki costumes are so heavy they weigh fifty pounds! Today, technology has changed the way designers work. They use 3D printers and modeling software to make clothes more efficiently. These digital tools help them save time and use less material.
