A prop is an object used on a stage or screen.

Actors use these items to tell a story. A prop can be a handheld book or a cup. It might also be a tool or a weapon. These objects help make a setting feel real for the audience. They also show important details about a character or their world. Props are different from the scenery or the costumes. They are anything movable that an actor interacts with during a show.

One person is in charge of these items. This person is called the property master. They find, make, and maintain all the props. An assistant stage manager helps set them up. Sometimes props are kept on a table backstage. Other times, they are placed on the stage before the show starts.

Some props are ordinary objects. Others need special work to look right. A lamp might be rewired to work with dim lights. A painter might make an object look old or used.

The word "property" has a long history in theater. The earliest use was in a play from 1425 CE. This play was called The Castle of Perseverance. During the Renaissance, acting groups worked together. Many actors brought their own small objects to a show. These items were their own personal property. However, large items like furniture were often company property. The short word "props" first appeared in 1841. The singular form "prop" appeared later in 1911.

There are many special kinds of props. A "hero prop" is a very detailed piece. It is made for the camera to see up close. It might have lights or moving parts.

Some props are called "breakaway" props. These are made to break safely during a scene. A bottle might be made of sugar glass. A chair might be made of balsa wood or cardboard. Even money can be a prop. People use fake money to follow laws or to save money.

Safety is very important when using weapons. A prop sword might have a dull edge. A knife might be made of rubber or plastic. For guns, a trained expert called an armourer is used. They oversee the safe handling of firearms. These guns often fire blanks.

Sometimes, dummy bullets are used for close shots. These are just bullet-shaped objects with no charge. Today, many people love to collect props. They buy items from famous movies at auctions.
