Scenic design is the art of creating the world where a story happens.

Designers build the sets and scenery for plays, musicals, films, and television. This work is part of a bigger field called scenography. Scenography includes not just the physical sets, but also the light and sound. A designer helps shape the mood and the pace of a show. Richard Foreman once said that design creates the world we see. Designers work with directors and writers to match the visual look to the story.

To make a world, designers use several important tools. Set pieces are physical things like walls, platforms, and furniture. These show the time and place of the story. Props are objects that actors hold, like a simple cup or a strange item. Backdrops are large paintings or digital projections that create depth.

Lighting is also vital to set the mood and focus. Designers must also make sure the set is functional and safe. This means actors can move easily and change scenes quickly. Scenic artists even paint textures to make things look very real.

Scenic design has changed a lot over a long time. It began in the outdoor theaters of ancient Greece with basic props. During the Renaissance, better tools allowed for more realistic sets. In the early 1900s, the New Stagecraft movement changed everything in America. Designers like Robert Edmond Jones moved away from tiny details. They preferred simple shapes and symbols to show a feeling. Later, a style called poetic realism used soft light and romantic images. This helped tell the stories of writers like Arthur Miller.

Today, many different styles of design exist on stage. Some designers focus on spectacle, which means huge visuals and big machines. This style is common on Broadway and looks a bit like movies. David Mitchell is a designer known for using moving sets. Other designers prefer minimalism, which uses very few items to suggest a place.

Famous designers include Robin Wagner, who worked on Broadway musicals. Bob Crowley is another great designer known for his work on The Lion King. He used traditional African styles with modern stagecraft.

Designers work in different ways depending on where they live. In Europe, many are called scenographers because they handle sets, lights, and costumes. In America, the focus is often on building realistic physical environments. Australian designers also often handle many different jobs at once.

Other cultures use very different methods for their theater. Japanese Kabuki theater uses symbolic sets and bright colors. Chinese opera uses large backdrops to help the actors' movements. No matter the style, the goal is to help tell a story.
