You only need a board and a smooth floor. Many skaters use music for their shows. They move like they are dancing. Some moves also look like gymnastics.

Surfers started this style in the 1950s. They wanted to skate when ocean waves were bad. They copied moves from the water. In the 1960s, skaters added dance moves. Later, they added flip tricks. A skater named Rodney Mullen helped with these new tricks.

Many people compete in freestyle. In 1983, Diane Veerman skated in a big contest. She placed 13th out of 31 people. A group called C.A.S.L. helps new skaters. It was started in 1982. Many top pros started there. Later, new groups helped skaters meet around the world. One group is the World Freestyle Skateboard Association. It was founded in the year 2000. This group helped more people find interest in the sport.
