Freestyle scootering is an extreme sport. Riders use kick scooters to perform tricks. They ride in skateparks or on city streets. They might use stairs, curbs, or hand rails.

In 1999, a man named Wim Ouboter made a foldable scooter. These were meant for easy travel. They were light and easy to carry. However, they were not strong enough for tricks. They would often break under stress. Riders even used hot glue to fix plastic wheels.

Today, scooters are built much stronger. Makers use metal for the wheels and bars. They use a threadless fork to make the front part tougher. They also use one-piece decks. These decks are welded together so they do not wobble. A system called SCS helps hold the bars and fork together.

People love this sport. They join online forums to meet others. There are even big contests. The first world championship was in 2005. Now, riders compete for titles in different groups. Some people even hope to see it in the Olympics.
