Most steamboats use paddlewheels to push through the water. Some use a screw propeller. A propeller is a part that spins to move the boat.

Early steam engines were very heavy. They did not have much power. James Watt made better engines. These new engines could turn wheels easily. Later, people made high-pressure engines. These engines were much better for work. They used fuel well and had a lot of power.

One famous boat was the Charlotte Dundas. It was built in Scotland. It could pull heavy barges along a canal. This showed that steam power really worked for ships.

In America, Robert Fulton made a successful boat. It was called the North River Steamboat. It carried people between New York City and Albany.

Later, engines became even better. Some used a compound way. This means they used steam more than once to save fuel. This helped ships carry more goods across the ocean. Today, many ships use a steam turbine. This is a very efficient way to make power.
