This boat was named the Charlotte Dundas. It was 56 feet long and had a wooden hull. It proved that steam power could be used for real work.

Most steamboats move by turning paddlewheels or propellers. Small steamboats typically work on lakes, rivers, or in short-sea shipping. When these vessels grow large enough to be seaworthy for the ocean, they are called steamships. The term "steamboat" is often used for smaller craft. You might see them labeled with prefixes like SS or S.S., which stands for "Screw Steamer." Other boats might use the designation PS for "Paddle Steamer." These machines changed how humans move across the water.

To understand how they work, we must look at the history of the engine. Early designs used the Newcomen steam engine. These engines were very heavy and produced very little power. This created an unfavorable power-to-weight ratio. Because the engines were so heavy, the boats needed very strong structures. The reciprocating motion of the Newcomen engine beam also required complicated mechanisms to create movement.

James Watt later improved the engine by adding a double-acting cylinder. This design injected steam at each end of the piston stroke. This allowed the engine to create rotary motion, which is a turning movement. This rotation made it much easier to turn a paddlewheel.

Even with Watt's improvements, the power-to-weight ratio remained low. The real breakthrough came with the high-pressure steam engine. These engines were much more fuel efficient and had a high power-to-weight ratio. They were made possible by better boilers and components that could withstand high internal pressure. However, early high-pressure engines were dangerous. Because there were no pressure gauges to monitor them, boiler explosions were common. Inventors like Richard Trevithick and Oliver Evans introduced these engines after the Boulton and Watt patent expired in 1800.

In the late 19th century, engineers developed the compound steam engine. This type of engine uses multiple expansion to increase efficiency. It works by taking exhaust steam from a high-pressure cylinder and sending it to a lower-pressure cylinder.

This process allowed trans-ocean steamers to carry less coal and more freight. This change greatly increased international trade. Later, near the end of the 19th century, the steam turbine was developed. The steam turbine is the most efficient engine for marine propulsion.

Other inventors like John Stevens pushed technology further. His ship, the Little Juliana, was the first to use a screw propeller in 1804.

Stevens also designed the Phoenix, which successfully navigated the open ocean.

Steamboats eventually moved from rivers to the deep ocean. Richard Wright's "Experiment" was the first sea-going steamboat in 1813. Later, in 1819, the Savannah became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
