These ships carry people across wide oceans. They also carry mail and cargo. Unlike cruise ships, liners follow a fixed schedule. They travel from one place to another on set routes.

Liners must be very strong. They sail through rough seas and big waves. To stay safe, they have a thick hull. The hull is the outer shell of the ship. They also have a deep draft. This means they sit deep in the water for stability.

They carry lots of fuel and food for long trips. Their captain's tower, called a bridge, is high up. This helps the captain see far ahead.

In the past, liners were the main way to travel between lands. New tools like the steam engine helped them grow.

Large steel hulls also made them faster and safer. After World War II, many people began using planes instead. Now, only one ocean liner is still in service. It is the Queen Mary 2. It is the largest liner ever built.
