Engineers work on ships, ocean structures, and tools. They design how ships move and how they stay working. They use many sciences to do this. They use math and physics to build things. They also use electrical and computer science.

One job is to manage ship engines. A marine engineer can become a chief engineer. This is a very high rank. It is equal to the ship's captain. Engineers also work on things like deep-sea cables. These cables carry most of the internet across the world.

Working in the sea is hard. Salt water can cause corrosion. This is when metal breaks down or rusts. Engineers use special metal parts to stop this. They also use a process called anti-fouling. This stops sea life from growing on the ship. If too much life grows, the ship is not smooth.

Engineers must also keep the ship stable. They do this by managing fuel and ballast water. Ballast water is water kept in tanks to balance the ship.
