People who do this work are called shipwrights. This job is very old. Long ago, humans likely used rafts to travel.

In ancient Egypt, people joined wood planks together. They used a method called mortise and tenon. This means they cut holes and shapes to fit. They used grass or pitch to seal the gaps. This kept the water out.

In Southeast Asia, Austronesian people used a special way. They used the lashed-lug technique. They tied planks together with ropes. They used parts from plants to make the joints tight. They also made sails from woven leaves.

As time passed, builders used new tools. In the 17th century, Dutch shipyards used windmills. These windmills powered saws to cut wood. Later, builders used iron for parts. They used it because curved wood was hard to find. Eventually, people began making whole ships from iron and steel.
