Long ago, people used rafts to travel. They used reeds to make them. Later, people learned to join wood planks together. This helped boats stay dry on the water.

In Egypt, workers used grass to seal the gaps. This kept the water out. Some boats were very long. One was 75 feet long!

In other lands, people used ropes to tie boats. They used plants to make sails. These sails catch the wind to move.

Now, people use iron and steel. These make very strong ships.

This occupation has roots that extend back before recorded history. For much of human history, a ship represented the most advanced structure a society could produce. Today, the combined field of ship construction and repair is called naval engineering. This discipline includes both commercial and military applications. The specific creation of smaller boats is referred to as boat building.

Ancient maritime history began with very simple technology. The earliest evidence of maritime transport by modern humans involves the settlement of Australia between 50,000 and 60,000 years ago. These early travelers likely used rafts, possibly equipped with sails. As technology developed, builders moved toward water-tight hulls. This was a major shift from the "flow through" structure of a raft. In the Mediterranean and Southeast Asia, builders developed hulls that could keep water out entirely. One early method used in Egypt was a "shell first" technique. Builders joined hull planks edge to edge using tenons set into mortices.

Different regions developed unique construction styles. In the Mediterranean, builders often used dowels to pin tenons in place during classical antiquity. Northern Europe utilized clinker construction, where planks overlap one another. Some ships, like the cogs, used flush-planked methods for their bottom sections. By the late 15th century, these traditions merged. Northern builders adopted carvel construction, where planks lay side by side. They also replaced the Mediterranean quarter rudder with a center-line mounted rudder. This era also saw the rise of the three-masted ship. These vessels typically used square sails on the fore and main masts. They used a fore and aft sail on the mizzen mast to improve sailing.

Austronesian maritime technology provides a unique example of ancient engineering. Between 1500 BC and 1500 AD, Austronesian people settled many Pacific islands. They used a method called lashed-lug construction. The simplest ancestral boats began with a single hollowed-out log for the bottom. Two planks were added to the sides. Two horseshoe-shaped wood pieces formed the prow and the stern. These parts were fitted together with dowels and lashed with ropes made from rattan or fiber. These ropes were wrapped around protruding wooden lugs on the planks. To ensure the hull was water-tight, they used caulking made from plant pastes or tapa bark. These materials would expand when wet to tighten the joints. They also used sails made from woven pandanus leaves.

Ancient Egypt also left a massive record of shipbuilding. As early as 3100 BC, Egyptians assembled wood planks into hulls. The Abydos boats are a famous group of 14 ships discovered by Egyptologist David O'Connor. These ships were constructed of wooden planks that were "sewn" together. Woven straps lashed the planks, and reeds or grass were stuffed between them to seal the seams. One ship from this group dates to 3000 BC and was about 75 feet or 23 meters long. Another famous example is the Khufu ship. This 43.6-meter vessel was sealed in a pit near the Great Pyramid around 2500 BC. It used mortise and tenon joints to hold the planks together.

Industrial advances eventually transformed how ships were made. In the 17th century, Dutch shipyards used mechanical saws powered by windmills to cut timber. The invention of the logarithm in 1615 helped designers create accurate hull curves. This was especially important when scaling shapes up in a mould loft. As technology progressed, iron became more than just a material for nails and bolts. By the mid-18th century, iron knees were used as structural components. This shift was partly caused by a shortage of "compass timber." Compass timber is naturally curved wood that provides strength without weaknesses from cutting across the grain. Eventually, builders moved from iron to using entire ships made of steel.

Shipbuilding has always been connected to global trade and mathematics. The Austronesian maritime trade network linked Southeast Asia to East Africa and the Middle East. This network eventually became part of the Spice trade and the Maritime Silk Road. In India, the Harappan civilization built the world's oldest known tidal dock around 2500 BC at Lothal. These ancient ports established trade links with Mesopotamia. Even the development of complex mathematics, like the logarithm, was driven by the need for better ship designs. From ancient reed boats in Mesopotamia to massive modern steel vessels, shipbuilding drives human exploration and connection.
