Long ago, balls were very different. In medieval times, people used leather shells filled with cork. Some balls used animal bladders inside to hold air. These were hard to kick and broke easily. In 1838, Charles Goodyear made vulcanized rubber. This was a way to treat rubber to make it strong. It helped the ball bounce well. It also helped it stay good in rain or mud.

Modern balls are much more complex. Most have 32 panels. These panels are shapes like pentagons and hexagons.

Inside the ball is a rubber bladder. This part is filled with air to make it firm. The outside can be made of leather or plastic. Some balls use heat to glue the parts together. This is called thermo-bonding.

Today, balls use new technology. Some have tiny microchips inside. These chips can connect to a phone. In the 2026 World Cup, chips will help referees check the game. Many balls are made in Sialkot, Pakistan. This is a big center for making them.
