Football boots are special shoes for sports.

People call them cleats or soccer shoes in North America. They help players grip the grass. Most boots have studs on the bottom. These studs keep players from slipping.

Long ago, these shoes were very different. In the 1800s, players wore heavy work boots. These boots had steel toes and long laces. They were thick and hard.

Later, boots became lighter to help players move better. In 1954, Adi Dassler made screw-in studs. This was a big change for the sport.

Today, boots use new materials. Some use soft leather from animals like kangaroos. Others use synthetic fabrics that are light and strong. Some new boots do not even have laces.

These laceless boots can help with ball control. There are also many different styles. Some are for hard ground. Others are for soft, wet grass. Players even pick bright colors to show their style!
