Track spikes are special shoes for racing.

They have small points on the bottom. These points help runners grip the track. This helps them run fast.

These shoes are very light. Some weigh less than half a normal shoe.

The front of the shoe bends up. This is called a taper. It helps runners stay on their toes. If you walk in them, you might get hurt. They are made for racing, not walking.

You can use a tool called a spike wrench to screw the points in. Most shoes have holes called spike wells. Some spikes are shaped like a pyramid. Others look like a thin needle. There are also Christmas tree spikes. These have a flat end to press into the track.

Different races need different shoes. Sprint spikes are very stiff. They help you move power into every step. Distance spikes are softer. They help your feet feel good during long races.

Allyson Felix even made her own brand of these shoes. She won Olympic medals in them.
