Many racers also skate on ice. They often switch between the two sports.

To race well, skaters need special gear. They wear close-fitting boots made of leather or carbon fiber. These boots are often custom-made to fit the foot perfectly. The boots have a frame that holds the wheels. Most skaters use four wheels. Some use three wheels if they have small feet.

The wheels can be very hard. Hard wheels help skaters go faster.

Skaters use special moves to win. They bend low to stay small in the wind. This is called being aerodynamic. This helps them cut through the air. They also use a move called the double push. This lets them get two pushes in each stride.

It takes a lot of work to be a pro. Skaters must train their legs and their whole bodies. They also follow a strict diet to stay strong.
