Long ago, people played baseball with bare hands. Early gloves were just leather with the fingertips cut off. They were mostly used for padding. Later, players added a web between the thumb and finger.

This web creates a pocket to catch balls better. Today, gloves are very special tools. Catchers use a mitt. A mitt is large and has no fingers. It looks like a mitten. First basemen use wide mitts to scoop up balls. Infielders use small gloves with shallow pockets. This helps them throw the ball fast. Outfielders use long gloves with deep pockets. These help them catch high fly balls. Most high-quality gloves are made of heavy leather. Some new gloves even use Kevlar. This is a strong material used in bullet-proof vests.
