Most bats have a wooden blade and a cane handle. The blade is usually made from willow wood. This wood is very tough. It does not dent or break easily when hit by a fast ball. It is also light to hold.

Players must care for their bats to keep them strong. They use raw linseed oil to protect the wood. This oil helps the bat stay safe from changes in the air. They also use a mallet to hit the wood. This task is called knocking-in. It makes the wood fibers tight and strong.

Bats have changed over a long time.

Modern bats can have different shapes. Some have a shorter blade and a longer handle. These are made for fast games called Twenty20. Rules say the blade must be made of wood. This helps keep the game fair for everyone.
