It is a very old game. People in England played it long ago.

One book from 1744 calls it base-ball. Today, many children in the UK play it. About seven million children play in schools.

Teams take turns batting and fielding. A batter hits a small, hard ball. They use a bat made of wood, plastic, or metal. The batter runs around four bases. They run in a circle. They must run in an anti-clockwise direction. If they reach the fourth base, they score a rounder. They can also score a half rounder.

A player can be put out in many ways. A fielder might catch the ball cleanly. A fielder can also touch a base with the ball. This is called a stump. If a player is out, they must stop running. In Ireland, the GAA makes the rules. They play on a large, square field. In England, the game uses a smaller pitch. Both versions are very special to the people who play them.
